“Petal Mosaic” is a joyful exploration of symmetry and color each flower block radiating like a mosaic of hand-cut petals. Designed in a cozy quilting room during early spring, the inspiration came from watching perennial blooms returning to life after a long winter. The juxtaposition of clean, white negative space with vibrant strip-pieced borders gives this quilt both structure and spontaneity — making it a perfect balance of traditional and modern.
The quilt was pieced entirely by hand using a DIY raw-edge applique technique, then finished with machine quilting in petal outlines. The vibrant fabric strips (reminiscent of a jelly roll) were chosen from scrap bins — a testament to the quilting pattern free spirit of its creator.
A funny hiccup during the process: one flower had to be resewn after it was placed upside down — leading to a running joke in the quilting circle: “Every flower has a wild side!”
